Negative-Balance Protection
Also known as: negative balance protection, NBP, zero-balance protection, debt protection
What is it?
Negative-balance protection is a broker commitment that your account cannot fall below zero, so a price gap that overshoots the stop-out cannot leave you owing the broker money. It only ever matters in a gap. Picture a $4,000 account short one EUR/CHF lot with a stop 40 pips away.
Without negative-balance protection
- Account before the gap: $4,000
- Position: one EUR/CHF lot, stop 40 pips away
- Weekend gap: 320 pips straight through the stop
- Loss realised: $7,200
- Closing balance: -$3,200, a debt the broker can pursue
With negative-balance protection
- Account before the gap: $4,000
- Position: one EUR/CHF lot, stop 40 pips away
- Weekend gap: 320 pips straight through the stop
- Loss realised: capped at the account balance
- Closing balance: $0, and the $3,200 shortfall is the broker's
The market reopens 320 pips through that stop, and there was no price in between at which the position could be closed - so it closes at a $7,200 loss. Without protection the account settles at minus $3,200, and that shortfall is a debt the broker is entitled to pursue. With protection, the balance is reset to zero and the $3,200 is absorbed by the broker.
Where it applies is a matter of regulation, not goodwill. It is mandatory for retail clients under UK, EU and Australian rules and voluntary in many offshore jurisdictions, and accepting professional-client status to unlock higher leverage usually waives it. The brand on the website tells you nothing here - what matters is the legal entity your account is actually opened with.
Why it matters: Negative-balance protection caps your worst case at the money already in the account, so an overnight gap cannot turn a trading loss into a debt you still owe.
Without it, a single gap through your stop can produce a liability larger than everything you ever deposited.
Real-world example
A 320-pip weekend gap through the stop on one EUR/CHF lot produced a $7,200 loss on a $4,000 account: minus $3,200 owed without protection, or zero with it.
How SignalBots handles it
Every SignalBots signal states a stop-loss, but no stop can fill inside a gap - so confirm your broker's negative-balance policy before trading around weekends and scheduled events. See /risk-warning.
Pro tip
Check which legal entity holds your account, not the brand on the website. The same broker often runs one regulated entity that offers protection and an offshore one that does not.
Common pitfalls
Accepting professional-client status for higher leverage without noticing that it usually waives negative-balance protection in the same click.
Frequently asked questions
How can an account go negative if I set a stop-loss?
A stop is an instruction to close at the next available price, not a promise of that price. When a market reopens far below your level there is no price in between, so the position closes wherever trading resumes.
Is negative-balance protection legally required?
For retail clients it is mandatory under UK, EU and Australian rules, and voluntary in many offshore jurisdictions. Because a broker can operate several entities, the answer depends on the one your account is opened with.
Does it cover every instrument?
Usually it applies account-wide across leveraged products, but the wording can exclude certain instruments or apply per account rather than per position. Read the client agreement's exact scope rather than the marketing page.
Do professional clients get it?
Generally not. Professional status raises the available leverage in exchange for dropping several retail protections, and negative-balance protection is one of the first to go. It is a genuine trade-off, not a formality.
Does it make gap risk safe to ignore?
No. It caps the loss at your account balance, which can still be the entire balance. Position sizing and awareness of scheduled events remain the real defences, and your capital is at risk regardless.
Trading involves substantial risk of loss. Historical and backtested results do not guarantee future performance. Read the full risk warning.
