BPR: Balanced Price Range

Also known as: BPR, overlapping fair value gaps, double gap overlap, balanced price array

What is it?

A balanced price range is the overlap between a bullish fair value gap and a bearish fair value gap in the same price area. Price delivers hard one way and leaves a gap, then delivers hard back the other way and leaves a second gap across the same prices. The band where the two overlap is the balanced price range. The name describes what happened to the inefficiency. A single gap is one-sided: one side of the book was skipped.

Live example
GBP/USD - where a bearish gap and a bullish gap overlap GBP/USD 15m

The shaded 1.2672 to 1.2680 band is where the two opposing gaps overlap - eight pips wide instead of sixteen, which is what makes the 12-pip stop possible.

When an opposite gap prints over the same prices, both sides have now been delivered there, so the area is balanced rather than inefficient. Traders treat the overlap as a stronger array than either gap alone, because two opposing displacements both used it. On GBP/USD 15-minute, a bearish gap ran from 1.2688 down to 1.2672 and the rally that followed left a bullish gap from 1.2664 to 1.2680. The overlap, 1.2672 to 1.2680, was the balanced price range. Price returned to 1.2678 an hour later, held, and ran to 1.2724 - 46 pips against a 12-pip stop below 1.2666.

The practical value is that the overlap is much narrower than either gap, so the entry area and the invalidation are both tight. The practical limit is that it is still one array in a context: a balanced price range against the higher-timeframe direction, with no liquidity pool to draw price toward, fails as readily as any other level. Your capital is at risk on every entry. See /risk-warning.

Why it matters: The overlap of two opposing gaps is a much narrower zone than either gap alone, which gives you a tighter entry area and a closer invalidation.

Trade impact: Medium

It narrows a wide inefficiency into a precise band, improving the reward-to-risk on the entry without changing whether the underlying direction is right.

Real-world example

On GBP/USD 15m, a bearish 1.2688-1.2672 gap and a bullish 1.2664-1.2680 gap overlapped at 1.2672-1.2680; price returned to 1.2678 and ran 46 pips with a 12-pip stop.

How SignalBots handles it

SignalBots signals publish a precise entry rather than a zone, so a narrow array like this reaches your platform as a single level with the stop already measured from it. See /risk-warning.

Pro tip

Trade the overlap only in the direction of the second displacement - the gap that printed last tells you which side is currently being delivered.

Common pitfalls

Calling two nearby gaps a balanced price range when they do not actually overlap, which turns a precise band into a guess at the space between them.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do the two gaps have to overlap exactly?

They have to share price, not match. The balanced price range is only the band both gaps cover; if they merely sit near each other with clear air between, there is no balanced price range.

Which direction do I trade it in?

Usually the direction of the second, more recent displacement, since that is the side currently being delivered. The higher-timeframe bias should agree, otherwise the array is a countertrend level.

Why is it considered stronger than a single gap?

Because two opposing displacements both traded through the same prices, so the area has been delivered from both sides. That is the reasoning; it is a rationale for the array, not a probability you can rely on.

Where does the stop go?

Beyond the far edge of the outer gap, not the overlap. The overlap gives you the entry; the invalidation still needs the whole array to be wrong.

How long does a balanced price range stay relevant?

Until price closes decisively through it, which inverts it the same way a failed gap inverts. Most traders also drop it once structure shifts against the displacement that formed it.
