Gate.io is a large offshore crypto exchange with a growing set of regional licences; here is what it says about its own regulatory footprint and about running automated trading through its API.

  • Gate.io's EU entity, Gate Europe, holds a Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) VFA/MiCA authorisation and payment-institution licence, alongside other regional registrations (e.g. Dubai VARA, Japan FSA); it remains unregulated or restricted in many major markets, including the US, UK, Canada and mainland China, per its own Restricted Locations list.
  • Gate.io permits algorithmic and API-based trading: APIv2 keys are spot-only, APIv4 keys can be scoped to spot, margin, futures and delivery trading, and Gate.io's own guidance recommends leaving the withdrawal permission off for bot/API keys — withdrawals via API additionally require a pre-verified address and a 24-hour cooldown after any manual withdrawal.
  • Gate.io's User Agreement separately bans "Prohibited Trading Conduct" and "Prohibited Access Conduct" — abusive, latency-exploiting or system-gaming automated strategies, and any bot activity routed through undocumented or non-designated endpoints — with forfeiture of related profits and account suspension as stated remedies.
