How Does a Trading Bot Work on Bybit? The ICT Sequence

What decides a trade here is a fixed ICT sequence, applied the same way on every Bybit candle. First comes a liquidity sweep beyond a swing high or low, where resting stops get taken. Next, displacement produces a break of structure the other way and leaves a fair value gap behind. When price returns into that gap, the EA enters on the triggering candle with its stop-loss and take-profit levels attached, and market data and order routing run straight between Bybit and the EA through the connector in the build. If the tape turns flat and no valid structure forms, nothing is taken, and nothing is redrawn after the candle closes.

Bybit: licences & API/bot policy

Bybit's own regulatory status and its rules for connecting an automated strategy or EA-style bot via API keys, straight from Bybit's terms and API documentation.

  • Bybit's main global platform (bybit.com) operates under a Seychelles/British Virgin Islands entity structure and is not licensed by a top-tier regulator such as the FCA or ASIC for most markets; its EU arm, Bybit EU GmbH, holds a MiCA CASP licence from Austria's FMA, and Bybit MENA holds a VARA licence for institutional services: coverage varies sharply by country, so check which entity actually serves your region.
  • Automated and API-based trading is explicitly supported: Bybit's API Key Documentation lets a user create keys with granular permissions (read-only, spot/derivatives trading, transfers), and a withdrawal permission that is separate and normally left disabled and IP-whitelisted: a bot connecting via API should only ever be given trading permission, never withdrawal.
  • Bybit's User Agreement makes the account holder solely responsible for actions taken through their API keys, including by any bot or third-party tool, and reserves the right to suspend accounts for abusive automated behaviour (e.g. market manipulation, excessive order rates).
  • The Risk Warning Notice underscores that derivatives and leveraged crypto trading carry a high risk of rapid loss and that automating a strategy does not reduce that risk: an EA still trades against the same volatile, largely unregulated crypto market.

What to weigh before you run any EA on a crypto exchange account.

  • Crypto is highly volatile and trades 24/7; a single candle can move double-digit percentages, and perpetual-futures liquidations can cascade in seconds.
  • Many exchanges sit outside deposit-insurance or investor-compensation schemes: funds held on an exchange carry custody and counterparty risk if it halts withdrawals or fails.
  • An exchange API key is a security surface: a leaked trade-only key can still be used to move your open positions, so scope, IP-lock and rotate it carefully.

  • Under the EU's MiFID II, firms running algorithmic strategies must keep pre-trade risk controls, governance and testing in place. ESMA extended that scrutiny to AI-driven trading systems in 2026.
  • The FCA (UK) and ASIC (Australia) cap retail CFD leverage from 30:1 down to 2:1 and require negative-balance protection: a hard limit on the exposure any EA can take on a retail account.
  • Regulators consistently report that most retail CFD accounts lose money; automating the entries does not change that base rate.
  • CySEC, the FCA, ASIC and the CFTC all warn that an 'AI trading bot' promising guaranteed or risk-free returns is itself a fraud red flag: legitimate automation never guarantees a result.

US persons face a distinct set of rules for automated forex, futures and securities trading, and a specific regulator advisory aimed at trading bots.

  • The CFTC's advisory “AI Won't Turn Trading Bots into Money Machines” names automated-bot and AI-signal scams directly: one fake-AI forex-bot case ended in a $3.4 billion judgment.
  • Retail off-exchange forex dealers must register with the CFTC and be NFA Forex Dealer Members; soliciting retail forex orders, including for an automated system, requires NFA registration.
  • The SEC, NASAA and FINRA jointly warn that a phrase like “our proprietary AI system can't lose” signals an unregistered scheme, not legitimate automation.
  • FINRA Rule 3110 makes member firms supervise, test and register the people behind an algorithmic strategy: the institutional bar for 'supervised' automated trading.
