Bitfinex: licences & API-bot policy

Bitfinex is one of the oldest crypto exchanges and openly supports API-driven trading, but its regulatory footprint is limited. Check its licence scope and API key permissions before connecting any bot.

  • Bitfinex operates through iFinex Inc. (British Virgin Islands); its BFXNA and BFXWW entities are registered as a money transmitter with US FinCEN but are not licensed by NY DFS, and in 2021 iFinex and Tether settled CFTC charges for $42.5 million over past misrepresentations: treat Bitfinex as a lightly regulated, offshore-based venue rather than one under a major-market financial regulator.
  • Bitfinex publishes a dedicated API Terms of Service and exposes granular API key scopes (separate read, trade, and withdrawal permissions), so an Expert Advisor or bot can be restricted to trade-only access with withdrawals disabled, always create a scoped key rather than reusing account-wide credentials.
  • The Trading Rulebook and Exchange Terms of Service set out prohibited practices (e.g. market manipulation, wash trading) that apply equally to automated and manual order flow, and Bitfinex disclaims liability for losses arising from client-side API/bot misconfiguration.
